One of the key attributes which optimistic and positive people share is that they take credit for successes and attribute failures to external events. Sure, we have to take some personal responsibility – but in general terms not internalizing your failures is a good life strategy.
It is not necessarily a good strategy in poker though!
Depending on what stage of development a player is at, there are various external factors which take the blame for losing money. The cold hard reality is that given a skill edge and sufficient bankroll + time, the only person to blame for losses is yourself!
Here is a list of 5 things people blame for their losses:
1 – The Donks: if I had a buck for every time I heard that it is impossible to beat ‘so many donks’ or some variation of this. If you think this then stop it, and fast. Poker is not about some mythical ‘correct’ play, it is about adjusting your strategy to take advantage of opponents mistakes… and lets face it the people you label donks make more mistakes than anyone else!
2 – The Poker Sites RNG: People who blame their losses on poker being ‘rigged’ are borderline insane in my opinion. Certified random number generators and literally billions of hand histories independently analyzed found nothing wrong at any of the major sites… Yet trying to convince a losing player of this is next to impossible. Get over it please!
3 – Bad Luck: Another one I wish I had a dollar for… ‘I’m a good player, just unlucky’. Yeah, I know you really genuinely believe this with all of your heart… it is not true though, not at all. Every player gets the same cards and situations over the long term… sure luck plays a role in the short-term, if you have a significant volume and still blame luck then meh, your crazy!
4 – Cheats / Colluders: Sometimes you will come across cheats, not common though. If this does happen it is short-term and usually incompetent ‘dorm-teams’ at the lowest stakes… Not a viable one over time.
5 – Tools / Bots: Could be something in this… I mean people are using poker tools against you, and using them now. If you are trying to take poker seriously and not using tracking software or HUDs then you have a big disadvantage. You can get some awesome poker tools for a small investment – so there is no excuse why you should lose over the long term to players with these.
The message in this post is to stop spewing out blame for your losses to those external factors – take some responsibility and get working on your game… what works in life generally is not actually all that useful in poker.
GL at the tables!
